This is a very early Warner Bros. Publicity still featuring Errol Flynn. That much we know. We’d like to think it’s one of the first things he was assigned to after getting off the boat and reporting to work at the Burbank studios. One possibility is that Errol’s pitching in to stir up a little interest in Gold Diggers of1935, a picture likely getting ready to go about the time he reached our shores. But what’s with the hats? They seem to be the focal point of the exercise, so maybe it’s a product tie-in. If anyone has the lowdown on this obscure shot, please let us know, as we freely confess to total bafflement! It does, at least, help to whet our appetite for the upcoming Flynn biography by Lincoln Hurst, which promises to be the definitive work on one of the Greenbriar’s favorite actors. You go, Errol!
Thanks Greenbriar, for posting this rare early Flynn photo. Errols hair looks like a holdover from his time at Teddington Studios in England. This promo shot may be from the WB Technicolor short, "Pirate Party On Catalina Island" in which Flynn briefly appears as himself with soon to be wife, lily Damita. TCM runs this from time to time. Those girls do look familiar as does the rocky coastline. Just a guess....Keep up the great work on this unique blog!!
I must disagree with my learned colleague in Ohio. To me this shot looks pre-Catalina (wasn't that 1936?). I would guess the flaks hustled EF straight off the boat and into a publicity still marathon in anticipation of Capt Blood. Anyway, what did he look like out of his Peter Blood wig at this time? Maybe this is from the time of the duel scene with Rathbone. In any case, this is the best web site ever. Thanks Greenbrier!
