GREENBRIAR EARLY DISPATCHES for 6/20/13

If GPS Twittered, It Might Look Something Like This ...

Above is Bela Lugosi arriving at the House Of Wax premiere in 1953, accompanied by an ape on a chain. The picture comes out in October on 3-D Blu-Ray. I really hope Mystery Of The Wax Museum will also be a Blu-Ray transfer and corrected to reflect two-color look from 1933 ... The Big Parade is due also from Warners on Blu-Ray. Is this their answer to what Paramount did with Wings? There is a great article Richard May wrote for The Moving Image about the restoration ... What can be done at home making new trailers for classic movies is amazing. They're called "tributes," but companies would be wise to use them to fresh-promote oldies. Here are three on YouTube I liked: North By Northwest, Thunderball, and King Kong ... Will Universal do another Blu-Ray set of vintage monsters for Halloween this year? My suggested line-up would be Son Of F, D's Daughter, The M's Hand, The Black Cat, The Raven, Werewolf Of London, Ghost Of F, and Revenge Of The Creature in 3-D ... Warner Archive Instant keeps adding great titles. Just lately: Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman and Hollywood Canteen --- both HD! ... I always read Mike Clark's DVD reviews at Home Media Magazine, just as I did his columns in USA Today. MC knows film and writes lucid --- one of the best ... The ClassicFlix blog is great for keeping up with DVD announcements ... Finally, there is a site and DVD's I strongly recommend: The Thanhouser Company made over a thousand silent films between 1909 and 1917. Many are available on multiple DVD volumes via this preservation project, and ones I've seen are excellent. If you're into really early stuff, by all means check them out.
