I believe the script was one of the few efforts by Dashiell Hammett in Hollywood.
Caught this on TCM a while ago. Enjoyed it more than Cooper's "classic" movies. Funny how he started out as a tux-wearing sophisticate, but became more famous for Westerns.
Well, he's in westerns from the start, too— I saw an especially good one from 1928, directed by Victor Fleming, called Wolf Song at Capitolfest last year. He didn't do many in the mid-30s because nobody in A pictures did, but as soon as they came back, he did The Westerner.
